MANGAKINO HOSPITAL
PURCHASE COMPLETED AND APPROVED BOARD APPLIES FOR MAINTENANCE SUBSIDY At its meeting in Hamilton on Monday the Waikato Hospital Board was advised in a letter from the Dir-ector-General of Health (Dr T. R. Ritchie) that the Minister of Health (Miss Mabel Howard) approved the Board’s purchase of the Mangakino hospital at a cost of £35,441, inclusive of equipment. The Minister also approved the purchase of a saw bench and surface planer for the Waikato Hospital at a cost of £728. He had resolved to make application to the Minister for authority to purchase centrifuge limits for Waikato and Rotorua Hospitals at £720, recording apparatus at £366, and a filmmachine for the XRay department at a cost of £3OOO. With regard to the amenities of Mangakino Hospital, the Board confirmed a letter to the Director-Gen-eral of Health making application for approval to a proposal to erect a dwelling for a male orderly at an approximate cost of £730. In a letter to the Board, the Dir-ector-General advised that Mangakino Hospital was situated on Maori land, and Cabinet had approved the Crown taking the area on lease under the Public Works Act for a maximum term of 21 years. When that term was completed the Board would be given a sub-lease for the maximum term available at a peppercorn rental. The Director-General also advised that advance of the Government subsidy to meet the cost of MSangakino Hospital was authorised and that application should be made by the Board for the amount estimated for maintenance purposes and for erection of buildings. The chairman (Mr H. D. Caro) said that the cost of Hospital was £4729, less the charge for water services and sewerage installations. It was resolved that application be made to the Health Department for a subsidy on maintenance costs in accordance with the Director-Gener-al’s advice.
