MILK DELIVERY

FILLING BOTTLES AT GATE OBJECTION BY VENDORS Members of the Hamilton Milk Vendors Association were informing consumers that as from March Ist they would not be prepared to fill empty milk bottles left at the front gate. The association said this action was being taken because it appeared that consumers were quite unable to cleanse the bottles properly either on the inside or the outside. Vendors were prohibited by law from putting caps on the bottles after filling them and the association had note of several instances where the bottles were just left on the ground available to any stray dogs or cats that might be about. In addition vendors found difficulty in filling this type of container and if they held the bottle over their server the milk was inclined to run down the qutside of the bottle, thus causing the contamination of the rest of the milk in the server. The association asked that consideration should be given to the possibility of introducing a condition in the issue of milk vending licenses that the person to whom the license was granted should be a member of the association during the period of the license. It was submitted that it would be in the interests of the local milk authority and of the Hamilton Milk Treatment Corporation qs well as vendors if provision were made for a workable representation of the vendors on the directorate of the corporation.

The association felt that much misunderstanding had been caused in the past through the lack of co-operation and that if the four bodies at present responsible for Hamilton’s milk supply could form one joint committee in the shape of the directorate of the corporation similar misunderstandings would not arise in the future. These matters, together with a letter from the association concerning complaints regarding the keepingqualities of milk and cream and the cream content of bottled milk were referred to the milk committee.
