RACECOURSE APPOINTMENTS

Sir, —Your correspondent “ Fastidious ” aptly describes the public grandstand at the local racecourse as an “ almost tottering contraption.” This stand, which mars an otherwise beautiful course, has in the past been the subject of much jocular comment by visiting race-goers. However, it may not be so amusing to those who have heard it creaking and groaning in high winds. One instance at a meeting some time ago: Patrons who were below the stand noticed the building vibrating considerably. Probably the majority of the public above were so engrossed in “ the sport of kings ” that they did not feel it. Should it be at all windy next Saturday the racing public may well avoid this eyesore which could so easily become a monstrous death-trap.—l am, etc., RACE-GOER.
