HARBOUR BOARD REPRESENTATION
Sir, —I desire, categorically to deny the Minister of Marine’s statement that the Otago Harbour Board’s remit re harbour representation approved by the recent Harbours Conference at Dunedin, was based pn a false assumption. The issue is not what the Minister said, but what he did. When the Harbour Amendment Bill was under consideration by Parliament, strong representations were made to the Minister of Marine, requesting him to deal fairly with the 6 1,000 county people in Otago and give them the full representation (at least five members) on the Otago Harbour Board they are justly entitled to. The Minister deliberately ignored these representations and his evasive reply when asked for an explanation is ablatant affront to the intelligence of the people. His idea of fair play is to give to a few hundred waterfront industry employees the same number of representations on the Otago Harbour Board as 51,000 country people in Otago. This is typical of the unfair treatment meted out ad nauseum to the farming community by the Labour Government. It’s time for a change.—l am, etc., RICHARD S. THOMPSON Country Representative Otago Harbour Board, Weatherstones.
