TENNIS

TE AWAMUTU SUB-ASSOCI-ATION

FURTHER VISIT BY HAMILTON COACHES

Favoured with real tennis weather, for a change, the visit by leading players of the Hamilton Club proved very enjoyable. Mr M. A. Wakefield, was unavoidably absent last Saturday but thanks to him his place was filled adequately by Mr J. Roach, for several years Waikato singles champion and also runner-up New Zealand champion, and Mr Ivan Easton, present holder Waikato singles championship. Mr Roach instructed the 30 odd juniors present on correct stroking and court-craft in a very interesting manner and followed with an exhibition singles match against Mr Easton. Although the past champion proved too good for the present holder of the title, both players displayed correct and well-timed stroking, Mr Roach showing how the backhand drive can be equally as effective as the forehand.

Following the singles the visitors played a doubles match against Messrs Mervyn and Cyril Holmes, beating the latter 9—6 after a very good exhibition. It is to be hoped that the juniors in this district will practice along the lines demonstrated by these gentlemen so that their coaching will bear fruit. The Sub-Assoeiation is indebted to these Hamilton players who give of their time voluntarily for the good of the sport and it was along these lines that Mr J. C. Bradley thanked Messrs Roach and Easton at the conclusion of the doubles match.
