Times Marches On

It was thirty-four years yesterday since the Main Body of the First New Zealand Expeditionary Force sailed out of Wellington harbour for Egypt to take part in the First World War. The Main Body Brigade troops of the first reinforcements, consisting of 3499 men of all ranks and 3946 horses, representing every territorial regiment in New Zealand, sailed in the Manganui (flagship), Tahiti, Ruapehu, Orari, Limerick, Star of India, Hawke’s Bay, Arawa, Athenic, and Wiaimana. The fleet was led out of the harbour by H.M.S. Philomel, to be joined en route by several British and Allied warships, including one Japanese. In the following four years forty-three drafts of reinforcements followed the Main Body members of which fought in Egypt, Gallipoli, Palestine, and' France.
