FROM KAWHIA TO TE KAWA NO MAJOR WIORK THIS YEAR “ Have we any control over the Kawhia-Te Rau-a-Moa Road now?” inquired Cr T. B. Laimbeer at last week’s meeting of the Kawhia County Council. “ No ; ” replied the chairman, Cr E. Smith. Cr Laimbeer said he had noticed that the road-side growth had been cut back in places, and he would now like to see the corners cut off. The chairman said he had attended a meeting of the District Highway Board, and had asked the chairman a Question about the matter. The reply was that there was no hope of anything of a permanent nature being done this year. Cr Laimbeer: Up to March 31 ? ■ The engineer: Not till the new estimates come on. Cr Laimbeer added that quite a lot of ratenayers thought, when it was declared a State highway, that they would get something at once; they were getting a bit disappointed. The engineer: They have no technical staff available. The chairman said that the chairman of the Otorohanga County Council, Mr J. L. Wallis, was just as much concerned about it as he himself.' At a place about 20 miles from Kawhia, where the State Highway skirts around a hill-side, there have been slips on the off-side, a large •quantity of material falling into the gully below. These slips have now extended right to the metalled road and threaten further encroachment. The Works Department has therefore decided to make a deviation at this point: This has been surveyed and pegged and work on it will be started shortly. The deviation will result in eliminating one, if not two, bad corners, and will provide 'a safer, straight road.
