WOMEN’S INSTITUTE

TE AWAMUTU BRANCH The, Te Awamutu Women’s Institute celebrated its 20th birthday in the Parish Hall on Friday, September 10th. There was an excellent attendance of members. Visitors numbering over 50 were present from Hamilton, Whitiora, Te Kawa, Otorohanga, Kihikihi and Gisborne. After singing tKe New Zealand National Anthem, Mrs O’Brien extended a welcome to all pre,sent. The programme was as follows: Mrs E. White, pianoforte solos; Women’s Institute Glee Club, songs; Mrs K. Burgess, vocal solos; Mrs Hull, elocution; Patricia Stephens, dances and character recitation; play, Mesdames Watson and Macken. Mrs Atkinson played the accompaniments. An advertisement competition was won by Mrs Benson. The birthday cake which held pride of place on the well-filled tables, was made by Mrs Russell, who lit the 20 candles. Mesdames Delaney, Watson and Macken, who iced the cake, extinguished the candles. Mrs O’Brien then asked Mrs Angus, as Federation president, to cut the cake, and in doing so, Mrs Angus wished the Women’s Institute many more years of happy and active work.

A very happy interlude in the programme occurred when Mrs O’Brien, on behalf of the Women’s Institute, presented Mrs Angus with a long service badge. Mrs Angus has been a member of the Te Awamutu Institute for 18 years and during that time has worked hard for its success. Mrs Anguts suitably replied. Competitions resulted: Cup vase of flowers, Mrs Russell 1, Mrs Benson 2. Shoulder spray, Mrs Sutton 1, Mrs Russell and Mrs Irvine (tied) 2. Felt bag, Mrs Pascoe. Afternoon tea, served by the committee and members, brought a most enjoyable afternoon to a close.
