FERTILISER DELIVERIES

IN THE KAWHIA DISTRICT INTENTIONS OF RAILWAY * DEPARTMENT STORAGE IN TE AWAMUTU Mfr Wi. J. .Broadfoot, M.P., has received the following letter from the Hbn. R. Semple, Minister of Railways : “ In reply to your letter relative to the delivery of fertiliser to Oparau district I desire to inform you my inquiries reveal that the Northern Steam Ship Company runs two trips a year to Kawhia. These trips are run between Christmas and New Year, and convey fertiliser on the outward journey and wool on the return journey. “ The normal regular method of transport of manure to the Oparau district is by the combined rail and road service. This service provides the quickest, and, in most cases, cheapest way of transport. “ The lorrying of manure from the works direct to farms in certain areas last season was as you doubtless know due to the cumulative effect of a number of factors on our ability to provide wagons when they were needed. The position has since been met by the running of special manure trains during week-ends, those run during the

Bth/9th and 22nd/23rd Mjay weekends to Otorohanga, Te Kuiti, Hangatiki, and Kio Kio conveying 132 wagons with a net load of 1280 tons of manure for distribution in these areas. “ It is considered that the proposed running of special week-end manure trains and the improved wagon supply position as a result of the importation of new rolling stock, should provide adequately for the Oparau district during, the 1948-49 fertiliser season. “ With a view to establishing a bulk Store for the storage of manure in ‘this area, negotiations are in progress with the Commissioner of Works to make available to the Railways Department No. 1 Air Force shed situated on railway land at Te Awamutu, and should the Department be successful in acquiring this building, the distribution of fertiliser for these areas should be well provided for.”
