REFEREES’ BALL

A BRILLIANT FUNCTION ENJOYABLE GATHERING One of the most enjoyable dances held in Oparau for many years was the Annual Ball held under the auspices of the Kawhia Referees’ Association. The hall was filled to capacity—and more—with dancers from far and near, visitors coming from Cambridge, Hamilton, and Marokopa. The setting, which had been artistically arranged by a small band of referees, was* composed of native greenery and twirling ropes of lycopodium, interspersed with the Association colours of black and white. Two complete native palms flanked the stage, and a large monogrammed K. picked out in white flowers formed a fitting background. These decorations, combined with the multicoloured frocks of the ladies, made a truly gay and festive scene. A sumptuous home-cooked supper was daintily served by the wives of the referees, and was greatly enjoyed by the large crowd present. Novelty dances held during the evening were won by Miss J. Stewart and Mr T. B. Laimbeer, Mt and Mrs L. Smith, of Kinohaku, and Miss D. Laimbeer and partner. A competition was won by Miss E. Schaare, Te Rau-a-Moa, who received a dinner set.

Dancing continued until the early hours of the morning to strains of Lou Brown’s Orchestra.

Alfter supper, the President Mr J. Thorn, in a brief speech, welcomed the visitors on behalf of the Association, and thanked all those who had so willingly assisted in making the function such a wonderful success. Introduced as “ The Father of the Association,” Mr C. Stewart also expressed his appreciation, with parti'iular emphasis on the good work done by the ladies. Messrs J. Thorn and L. Lobb were masters of ceremonies.
