POSTAL FACILITIES

STREET POSTING BOX TO BE ERECTED NO POSTMAN DELIVERY IN - MEANTIME Mr W. J. Broadfoot, M.P., has made available to the Courier the following letter he has received from the Hon. F. Hackett, Postmaster-General. The letter is self-explanatory even if it is not entirely satisfactory to those concerned. Mr Hackett writes: — “In further reference to your representations on behalf of the Kawhia Chamber of Commerce for improved post office facilities at Kawhia: I am pleased to say that approval has been given for a street posting box to be erected in the Karewa portion of the township, at the corner of Waiwera and Hone Streets. “As regards the request for a postman’s delivery: to provide such a facility at Kawhia, an additional unit would have to be appointed to the staff, because the present members are fully occupied on counter, mail and exchange duties. There are only 95 permanent residents and the quantity of correspondence for delivery is so small that the appointment of an additional unit is not warranted. “However, I fullv appreciate that the establishment of a delivery would be a great benefit to the Kawhia residents, particularly to those elderly persons who live some distance from the post office. The question of arranging for a delivery will therefore be kept in mind for re-consideration at an opportune time.” Motoring Mishap A sensational motoring mishap occurred on the Raglan road on Saturday. Mr John Thorn was driving home in a car when a defect occurred in the steering gear, with the result that the vehicle became out of control, left the road, and came to rest in thick tea-tree on a steep bank. Neither Mr nor Mrs Thorn suffered the slightest injury. The car was only slightly damaged, but was brought back to the road only with considerable difficulty, and with the generous assistance of numerous helpers.
