THE WEEK’S ACTIVITIES

VISIT OF BROADCASTING UNIT A moible recording unit of the N.B.S. visited Kawhia recently and made several recordings of both local and national interest. The personnel who accompanied the unit were: Mr L. Fowler, officer in charge; Mr R. G. Haggett, assistant producer; Mr R. L. Miller and B. H. Cosnett, technicians. Among the recordings were those by Mr, Te Kanawa, waiatas (songs) and karakia (chants); Mr Te Wetere, a chanted lament; the Wetere family, Maori part songs; Dorothy Wetere, solo> the Kawhia School choir, and Mr E. H. Schnackenberg, who recorded a talk on the history of the West Coast of the North Island, starting from the discovery, the landing at Aotea and Kawhia (Aotea and Tainui canoes), right up to the present times. It is a point of interest to know that the crews of the Tainui and Aotea canoes were the first human inhabitants of the West Coast. The van, which is an ex-R.N.Z.A.F. mobile airfield concert vehicle, was an object of great interest to Kawhia residents, both young and old, and its myriad dials and switches were intriguing to all. Sand Hills Reclamation Mr W. J. Broadfoot, M.P., in the House last week, introduced a plea for the reclamation of the sand hills between Kawhia and Aotea Heads and also those at Taharoa. The Prime Minister replied that the matter was in hand. Approximately 3000 acres at Kawhia and another 3000 acres at Taharoa are threatened with sand inundation. < Sports The Kawhia Bowling Club opened its 1947-48 season on Saturday, 25th October. A large number of members were present. But the occasion was marred by the stormy weather prevalent over the whole of New Zealand for the week-end.
