KAWHIA TOWN BOARD

CANDIDATES NOMINATED The following candidates have been duly nominated as candidates for the office of commissioners for the Kawhia Town Board: Alfred Martin Clark, William Henry Clarke, Ivan John Davies, Trevor Arthur Graham, Alfred William Jonathan*, Warren Telford Lentfer, Stephen Benjamin Sifleet*, Leslie William Spence, Walter Percy Ward*, William Frederick Fulcher Ward. * Denotes sitting member. As the number of nominations exceed the number of vacancies (five), an election is now necessary. County Elections The following persons have been duly nominated as candidates for the office of councillor for the several ridings of the County of Kawhia:— Awaroa-Te Kauri Riding, Stanley Dillon*, no poll; Oparau Riding, Edward Roy Jordan, no poll; Waiharakeke Riding, Frederick John Stokes*, no poll; Marokopa Riding, Ernest Phillips*, no poll; Taharoa Rijding, Ernest Edward Smith*, Max Walter Coutts*, no poll. All the above have been duly elected, no poll being required. Kawhia Riding William Henry Clarke, Thomas Brabson Laimbeer*. An election will be necessary. Te Awamutu Electric Power Board The constituent district of Kawhia is entitled to elect one member of the Te Awamutu Power Board. Two nominations were received as follows: Roger Shepherd Clark, Edward Reginald Hone. An ‘ election will be necessary.

Golfers’ Social On Friday, 24th October, the Golfing Committee of Kawhia took a surprise party .to the residence of Mr A. W. Babbage (club president). During the course of the evening, the club trophies were presented: Menfe open, Mr A. W. O’Connor; ladies’ open, Mrs J. Thorn. The highlight of the evening was when the club captain (Mr Ivan Davies) presented Mr Babbage, on behalf of the members, with a chromium plated table lamp in appreciation of services rendered in the past. An excellent supper was provided by the ladies, and a thoroughly enjoyable evening was spent by all. Personal Miss M. B. Hills, Hamilton, has been spending a few days with her parents, Mr and Mrs A. Hills, of Kawhia. Guests at the Beach Hotel recently were: Messrs R. H. Miller and C. M. Cosnett, Auckland; Messrs R. G. Haggett and Leo Fowler, Wellington; Mr and Mrs Hyland and family, London; Mr and Mrs D. Dinnan, Auckland; Mr and Mrs Cullen and family, Auckland; Mr and Mrs Demmus and family, Te Kuiti; Mr and Mrs McDonald and family, Te Awamutu; Mr and Mrs Ashmore (sen.), Awamutu. Social A farewell party in honour of Mr and Mrs A. L. Baker was held at the residence of Mr and Mrs W. Davies, recently. An enjoyable time was had by all, and an excellent supper was provided by the ladies. In making a presentation to Mr and Mrs Baker and also to their daughter, Ailsa, Mr A. W. O’Connor said how sorry the residents of Kawhia were to lose the Baker family and that Mr Baker’s services, as headmaster of the Kawhia School, were more than appreciated. At the conclusion Mr and Mrs Baker were accorded musical honours. The Sports Club The Kawhia District Sports Club held a meeting in the Oparau Hall recently. The purpose of the meeting was to fix a date for the Annual Picnic Race Meeting and the election of officers’for the coming year. The date of the Picnic Meeting was provisionally fixed for Saturday, January 3, 1948. The following officers were elected: Patron, Mr W. J. Broadfoot, M.P.; president, Mr T. Stewart; assistant starter, Mr T. Nicholas; handicapper, Mr T. Laimbeer; clerk of scales, Mr W. J. Hitchcock; birdcage stewards, Messrs A. Macalister and E. M. Scott; clerk of the course, Mr L. Daysh, T. McMahon; protest committee, Messrs T. Nicholas, A. Macalister, L. Meredith. Makatu Pa Mr J. S. Porteous is at . present surveying the Makatu Pa. It is understood that this is being done with a view to the development of the Pa, together with the historical burial place of the Tainui Canoe, in order that the Pa be made into a model for .the whole of New Zealand. Maketu Pa is situated in a beautiful setting on the edge of the sea, with wooded rolling country behind it.
