“YOUNG MEN HAVE ATTAINED GREATNESS”
“ Men have achieved greatness in their youth,” says the Journal of the Whangarei Junior Chamber of Commerce, in stating that the underlying principle on which Jaycee activity is based is the conviction that there is a place in the community for young men—a place where civic service can be performed by youth through its energy and virility. W]illiam Pitt was Prime Minister of Great Britain at 24 years of age; Napoleon was an emperor at 35 years; and Alexander the Great earned his title of greatness in a short life of 32 years. “We thus have precedent for our conviction, and Jaycee accordingly takes its place in the civil life of the community,” the statement continues. “ Our value to the community is governed by the strength of our membership and the ’ tenacity of our purpose.”
