WOMEN’S REST ROOM
WAIPA COUNTY COUNCIL ENDORSES PROPOSALS - SUPPORT AND ENCOURAGEMENT Wihen the request of Te Awamutu Rotary Club that the Waipa County Council have representation on a committee which is seeking the establishment of a rest room in Te Awamutu was placed before last Monday’s meeting of tile Waipa County Council a very ready response was made. Cr Onion expressed surprise that Te Awamutu had not long ago set about the provision of the amenity in question; Hamilton, too, was somewhat similarly lacking. In southern districts very creditable rest rooms had been provided, and towns in Waikato could not justify the non-ar-rangement of similar provision. In any case the Council could fully support the movement, for the rest room very directly concerned the country women of the district. He strongly urged that the Council give assistance and encouragement. Cr Hall reported having attended the public meeting to watch the proposals. Not having had opportunity of a direction from the Council he could not pledge any action at that stage. In his view a rest room in Te Awamutu was most urgently required, and as a first step a fully representative committee was being set up to advance the negotiations.
Crs Alexander and Garland also strongly supported the movement. After a brief discussion it was decided that the chairman (Mr S. C. B. •Macky) represent the. Council on the committee. .
It was asked whether the Council could contribute financially, but the information indicated —that the law did not allow general revenues to be used. Nevertheless, said, a councillor, the Council’s delegate could go to the committee assured of his Council’s co-operation in finding ways and mjeans for the establishment of a women’s rest room at. the earliest possible date.
