SOUP KITCHENS

OF GREAT HELP TO GREEKS “PUT THEM BACK ON THEIR FEET” “Soup kitchens, the object of scorn in some countries, play a major part in this,” Mr G. H. Gilling, leader of CORSO’S welfare team in Greece, stated in a letter to CORSO headquarters, Wellington, from Kavalla. “ Some of the villages in our earlier visits presented pitiful sights, but good food under good management is proving its worth,” he declared. In spite of the distribution of over 9,000,000 garments in Greece, clothing was still a major problem, he continued. Village school children were in the greatest need. The Health department reported the difficulty of controlling scabies, prevalent in villages because the children had poor clothes and no change. While the number of people classed as indigent was still high, it was slowly being reduced, said Mr ing. Numbers were still returning home with all they possessed on their backs. Last month health camps were opened for 50,000 children of northern Grece, and of this number 15,000 were from districts where the relief teams were working. The goal for the whole of Greece w’as 200|,000. Children stayed in the camps for three weeks under the supervision of trained staff. He said the problems of orphans in Greece was tremendous. The relief teams were giving orphans in institutions special attention, and steady progress in their all-round development was noticeable. At the end of June the Kavalla Repertory Company presented a play “Night Must Fall.” Included in th.e cast was the New Zealander Miss Betty Gentles. > For maintenance of the relief teams in Greece and for sending skilled relief workers asked for China CORSO is appealing for funds. Donations should be addressed to “CORSO, Wellington,” or forwarded to the nearest CORSO committee.
