MAORI SENTENCED

THEFT CHARGES ADMITTED PREVIOUS CHANCES IGNOREDOn a charge of stealing a suitcase and contents valued at £3 14s at the Hamilton railway station on June 7th, Rehu Reihana, of Arohena, was sentenced to two years’ reformative detention by Mr S. L. Paterson, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court, Hamilton, cn Friday. Reihana was sentenced to three months’ imprisonment for the theft of a pullover valued at 30s at the Frankton station later the same day. He pleaded guilty to both charges.

The magistrate pointed out that accused had not taken advantage of two chances given him recently but had chosen to live the life of a vagrant and common thief.

Reihana was admitted to probation for three years when he was before the court on May 30th on two charges of theft, said Senior-Sergeant H. F. Coddington. Since then he had been living the life of a vagrant. In a statement read by Constable J. T. Mills, Reihana said that he sold the suitcase at a second-hand shop at Frankton and spent the proceeds on food. He had been unable to obtain employment.
