WAIKATO ELECTORATE

NATIONAL PARTY CANDIDATE TWO NOMINATIONS RECEIVED When nominations for a candidate to contest the Waikato seat in the interests of the National Party closed on Saturday at Cambridge, two names being received. They were Mr G. F. Sim, M.P., and Mr A. G. Walsh. The choice of a candidate will be made at a meeting of the selection committee on July 6th. Mr Sim is the present member for Rotorua, which electorate has been absorbed as a result of the amendments in boundaries. He was 32 when he won the Rotorua seat in 1943, being the youngest Member of Parliament. He was born in Gisborne, and was educated there and also at the Pukekohe Technical School. On leaving school, he took up farming, and after gaining experience became manager of a sheep station. He was later a stock and station agent at Waiuku. He served in the Middle East during the war and was invalided home. in March 1942, after being wounded in the campaign at Sidi Resegh. Mr George A. Walsh has resided in Cambridge for the past 10 years, being a farmer at Monavale. He was born at Palmerston North 46 years ago, and spent his early life in the Manawatu and later in the Central Taranaki districts. He has always been actively interested in farming affairs, and was an office-bearer in the Farmers’ Union. He was, one of the founders of Federated Farmers in New Zealand, and at the present time is an executive member of the Do» 'inion Council, chairman of the meat and wool section in the Waikato Province and vice-nresrdent of the Cambridge branch. He is chairman of the Cambridge Veterinary Club.
