HAPPENINGS AT KAWHIA

THE WEATHER AND OTHER THINGS CIVIC AFFAIRS AND SPORT The Courier’s Kawhia correspondent says that the weather has given a sombre slate-grey appearance to the harbour, and the rain has kept residents indoors a very different aspect from the lovely weather of last week, when the fishing boats were busy and good catches were made outside the harbour, a bdat from New Plymouth doing particularly well. The Progress League is in active being, and all residents are welcomed to its ranks. Mr Martin Oldbury is the energetic and able secretary, and constructive suggestions for the betterment of Kawhia and its district are always keenly discussed at meetings of the League. As nearly, every town in New Zealand has a ten-year or other ambitiously-progressive plan Kawhia should fall into line, merely hinting judiciously about a road occasionally, but trying at the same time to inculcate the Biblical injunction to have patience. The basketball and football teams journeyed to Kinohaku on Saturday. The former team did well, winning by 28 goals to Kinohaku’s 12. They have been practising, and had the help of several energetic irrfatrons to put ginger into the practice games. The football did not come off so weß being beaten by 17 points to 9. It might be a good idea if the veteran players practised with the team during the week; then there might be a like result to that of the basketball team’s success.

Mt and Mrs L. Borck have left on a short holiday. It is surprising to observe the number of permanent residents in the Karewa end of the town. Kawhia is an ideal spot for retired people, and many more contemplate spending the evening of their days here by the sea.

Much improvement has been made in the town’s surroundings during the past few months, and that happy state of affairs seems likely to continue.
