RUGBY FOOTBALL

WAIPA UNION COMPETITIONS OHAUPO WIN FIRST GAME The Waipa Rugby Union’s various competitions were continued last Saturday in fine weather. A large attendance of the public was again apparent. The main attraction on No. 1 ground, between Ohaupo and Rovers, saw Ohaupo register its first win of rhe season by a narrow margin of two points. Rovers had bad luck on the run of play and should have scored on two more occasions, but nevertheless Ohaupo fully deserved its win as they seemed the more aggressive team of the two. Old Boys further increased their lead on the championship ladder by defeating United on No. 2 ground, whilst Pirongia registered a win on No. 3 ground against Waikeria. Ohaupo: Dunwoodie, McDonald, Nielson, Thompson, Karl, Monahan, Tarr, Forkett, Tickelpenny, Payne, Brownless, Higgins, Nielson, Scott, Rodgers. Rovers: Barton, G. Jowsey, Hart, Mariohooho, Halliburton, Douglas, Partridge, Arona, Melville, Pryor, Jowsey, J. Hinton, Bob Hinton, Rex Hinton, Clary. Ohaupo won the toss and defended the Park Road end and Rovers kicked off. Play was in Ohaupo half for the start and then Nielson kicked for Barton to line and Rovers took play to Ohaupo’s 25, where Rovers wese penalised. Ohaupo lined in Rovers’ half but Rovers kicked for Halliburton to start off. Play was taken to Ohaupo’s 25. Hart held on twice in succession, but Rover forwards carried play to Ohaupo’s 25, where Rovers were nearly across. From a syd scrum Ohaupo cleared and from the lineout Ohaupo started off and were successful in scoring, Forkett adding the extra points. Ohaupo 5, Rovers 0. Play was in the vicinity of half way for some time until Rex Hinton marked and lined and the Rover backs started off. Hart knocked on, but Douglas lined inside Ohaupo’s 25. Rovers were mishandling badly, which spoiled two or three chances of success. Halliburton went across, but too many hands on the ball saw a scrum, from which Jowsey scored and Halliburton added the extra points. Rovers 5, Ohaupo 5. From a penalty against Jowsey, Forkett lined near Rovers 25, but Rovers carried play to inside Ohaupo’s half, but Jowsey kicked too hard and Ohaupo touched down. Partridge got through, passed to Jowsey, but the return pass was forward. A passing rush by Rovers’ backs saw G. Jowsey go out on the corner and from the lineout Melville scored. Mariohooho missed the kick. Rovers 8, OJhaupo 5. Forkett broke away, kicked, and had Rovers in trouble, but Douglas kicked through and the ball went into touch-in-goal. Ohaupo carried play to Rovers’ 25 and Barton marked, to line near half way. Ohaupo gradually carried play back and a pass back to Barton saved a bad situation. Play was in mid-field when half-time came with the score— Rovers 8, Ohaupo 5. After the spell a series of scrums and lineouts was the order of play until Rovers were penalised and Forkett’s kick at goal hit the bar and bounced infield and Rivers carried play to Ohaupo’s 25. Rovers were going well at this stage and had Ohaupo in their 25 for some time. A knock-on from a pass spoiled a good movement and Rovers were fighting hard to get across. Hart missed a drop kick, a drop out resulting. A miss line kick by Barton saw Rodgers run 25 yards and score. Forkett missed the kick and the score was Ohaupo 8, Rovers 8. Rovers were soon attacking on Ohaupo’s line, but were penalised. From a series of lineouts inside Ohaupo’s 25, Rex Hinton scored. Halliburton missed the kick. Rovers 11, Ohaupo 8. Play was first in Rovers’ territory and then in Ohaupo’s territory, and then Ohaupo swung the ball into action and scored, Forkett adding the minor points. Ohaupo 13, Rovers 11. Ohaupo were going great guns now and throwing the ball about in good style. From a series of lineouts Douglas followed through and was unlucky in not scoring. Barton lined at half way and Rovers gradually carried play to Ohaupo territory and Hart was nearly across, but from a syd scrum Ohaupo touched down. Rovers seemed to have Ohaupo hemmed in their half but just could not bring success. When Ohaupo did kick through Barton sent them back. Even play followed with neither side gaining advantage, and a nice line kick by Forkett saw Ohaupo run off the field the winners by 13 points to 11. Mr R. Callis was the referee.
