OUR READERS’ VIEWPOINTS TRAFFIC FILTER DIRECTION SIGNS - Sir, —It would be appreciated if you could kindly make it known to your readers that the Automobile Association (Auckland) is not responsible for the conditions or the method of signposting at the Te Awamutu traffic island described in a recent article in your (paper, “My Day to Growl.” The Association consistently opposed the placing of a multiplicity of islands in a confined area, and recommended a system of sign-posting in keeping with its usual standard of directing motorists. The Main Highways Board is the controlling authority, and although the Association may niake suggestions the Board’s decision is final. Te Awamutu Borough Council supported the Highways Board’s proposals in preference to those submitted by the Association, and the Automobile Association was therefore in duty bound to carry out the wishes of the controlling bodies. At the time the signs were erected an appeal was made to the Highways Board’s representative closely to observe the reaction of motorists, as it was then forecast that the sign-post-ing was not likely to prove simple, clear, and effective.—l am, etc., R.
