THE HIGH SCHOOL

PRINCIPAL’S REPORT VARIOUS ACTIVITIES OF SCHOOL COVERED The principal, Mr H. Rochfort, submitted the following report to Friday night’s meeting of the Te Awamutu District High School Committee:— Second Term: The second term commenced on 27th May. It will end on 23rd August. Attendance of many pupils continues to be irregular. Heating: Necessary repairs have been effected and the heating system is in operation. The extensions promised to make the system more efficient have not been undertaken. Staff: Miss Olive Wells and Mr J. E. Elliott commenced duty in the secondary department at the beginning of this term.

School Girls’ Hockey Team: The girls’ seven-a-side A team won the junior cup at Hamilton on King’s Birthday for the second year in succession. They won all five games which they played and had only one point scared against them . School Buses: Mr R. A. Quinlan has been appointed garage assistant and has commenced duty. Mr R. J. Lisk, who is in charge of the buses, has made a report, which I enclose, upon the running of the buses since the opening of the school in May, 1939. The figures he gives are remarkable. The buses have been running for 7 years. During that time the State buses have travelled 441,376 miles, and have carried 1,091,000 children, and have never had an accident. I have also ascertained the figures for Messrs Hodgson’s buses. Up to July 31st, 1945, they had travelled 143,351 miles and carried 359,507 children, and they also have never had an accident. Without taking account of the children carried by Hodgson’s buses for the ten months since 31st July, State and Hodgson’s buses have travelled 584,727 miles (more than 23 times round the earth at its widest port), and have carried 1,450,507 children., without accident. This is a grand record, and both drivers and mechanics are deserving of warmest congratulations. Mid-year Examination: This will be held in the last week in June. Detailed reports will be issued to parents. Those present were Mr W. G. Parker (chairman), Messrs S. H. West, R. H Westbrook, A. S. Prisk, C. E. Howcroft, W. S. Earwaker, C. J. Flay and A. Betts.

Mr Rochfort, principal, and Mr L. A, Johnston, secretary, were present. An apology on behalf of Mr L, Young was sustained.
