LOCAL AND GENERAL

Light Horse Association. The annual meeting of the Te Awamutu Light Horse Association is set down for next Thursday night at the Oddfellows’ Hall. The Association has had a successful year.

Send for Dan “ What’s all this talk in the Courier about ragwort getting out of control ? ” asked a Te Awamutu farmer on Saturday. “ Send for Dan Sullivan—he’ll guarantee to ‘ control ’ anything ! ”

Too Much Pocket-money A complaint dealt with at the last meeting of the Te Awamutu Parents’ and Teachers’ Association that many children were receiving too much pocket-money was referred to at Friday’s meeting of the High School niittee. and the protest made by the Association was endorsed.

Application Granted An application from the Voluntary Aid Detachment of the Te Awamutu Red Cross for the use of the assembly hall at the Intermediate School for lectures, etc., on the second Tuesday in every month, was granted at Friday’s meeting of the High School Committee, members remarking on the excellent work being done by the Detachment.

Momentarily Pessimistic “I present my annual report tonight in case we are not here when the roll is called next month,” said Mr G. Donaldson, chairman of the High School Committee on Friday last. The election of the committee will be held in May, but whether the changed method of voting will apply is not yet certain. The primary school committee election will not be held until next April. The Spendthrift ' “ He’s the headmaster—and spends money like water I ” said a lady in pointing out the “ spendthrift ” to her visitor at a reecnt function held at the High School. It seems well, and certainly only fair, to add that the “ orgy ” of spending is done to provide better facilities for the education of the children, and it is apparently well done, as the annual reports indicate.

Fire Brigade Dance The dance organised by the Te Awamutu Fire Brigade, and held in the Town Hall on Saturday night, was a most successful and enjoyable function. Excellent music was supplied by the Fire Brigade Orchestra, assisted by Mr S. Barr.ett, and Mr M. Barnett acted as M.C. Fireman E. Mulgrew had charge of the supper arrangements. Monte Carlo waltzes were won by Miss Pepperell and Mr S. R. Clarke and Miss Smerdon and Mr C. Bowden.

Films in Schools “The appeal to the eye is more effective than that to the ear, and consequently film projectors are more useful in education than are radio sets,” said the senior inspector of schools' for Southland (Mr H. D. Prichard) at a meeting of the Southland Education Board. He added that the film projectors had proved a valuable adjunct to the work of the schools, many of which were equipped with radio sets.

Boring for Oil In spite of previous failures by the New Zealand Petroleum Company to find oil in the Dominion, it is expected that at least one more bore will be sunk before efforts are abandoned. The manager, Mr G. F. Barnwell, said yesterday that the Devon bore in Taranaki had been abandoned, and the plant was being dismantled for re moval to another site, the location of which has not yet been determined. It was likely that another well would be sunk, but the final decision had not yet been reached. If boring was resumed he did not know where it would be carried out, but the most likely part of the country was on the western side of the North Island.
