BOROUGH AFFAIRS

MEETING OF COUNCIL MILLER BUSH ROAD The usual fortnightly meeting of the Te Awamutu Borough Council was held on Monday night, Cr. V. A. de Coek presiding in the unavoidable absence of the mayor and deputymayor. Others present were Councillors Les. Armstrong, G. S. Clarke, C. J. Spiers, W. J. North, E. R. Olsen, and G. Dalton. FOREMAN’S REPORT The borough foreman, Mr R. H. Close, reported on maintenance and other work done during the fortnight. The men fencing! the new stock road are making good progress, he stated. MILLER BUSH ROAD The chairman of the Works’ Committee, Cr. C. J. Spiers, reported that together with the borough foreman he had met the Raglan County engineer and the Riding representative, Mr. Corcoran, on the job and had discussed the grading, etc. of the Miller Bush Road, and it was finally agreed that the Te Awamutu Borough Council pay £22 10s temporarily, a review to be made by the Pirongia Afforestation Committee with the view to getting a refund of this amount and the £45 contributed by the Raglan County Council. Cr. Spiers action was endorsed. UNSEWERED DWELLINGS

The borough sanitary inspector, forwarded a list of properties not as yet connected to the borough sewerage system, and recommended that the owners be required to connect with the borough sewerage system. The inspector’s recommendation was adopted. CONCRETING OF FOOTPATHS An application from Mr S. S. Preston for a 6ft strip of concrete footpath along his Teasedale Street frontages was approved. Mr Preston agreeing to pay his portion of the cost. He suggested that the Council should complete the footpath from the War Memorial up to his boundary, as this footpath fronts borough property the whole way, and is at present in a bad condition. The question of carrying out the suggestion made, and the task of interviewing other property owners in the street was referred to the Works’ Committee. Several other applications for concrete footpaths and entrances were approved, on the recommendation of the Works’ Committee, it being understood that the work would be carried out in order of priority. ARREARS OF RATES The Town Clerk presented a schedule showing the arrears of rates owing by ratepayers, and it was decided to hand the list of defaulters to the borough solicitors with instructions to sue. GENERAL A circular letter was received from the Municipal Association stating that if any difficulties should occur re manpower requirements the Council should refer the matter to the ..National Service Department at Wellington or to the Association. The borough treasurer presented statement of accounts to February 28, and which was considered very satisfactory. Details will be published after the annual meeting of the Council.
