SOCIAL EVENING
MANGAPIKO HOME GUARD LARGELY-ATTENDED FUNCTION The Mangapiko Hall was filled to capacity on Wednesday evening when a social and dance was sponsored by thq Mangapiko Home Guard. Organised on the lines of an Orphans’ Club, with Mr Bert Hey occupying the chair, the function proved a real success, reflecting highly on those responsible for its arrangement. With an orchestra of seven players and a variety of contributing artists, an excellent musical programme was particularly well-re-ceived by the large gathering of Guardsmen and their wives. The toasting of the King was followed by a rousing orchestral number, after which the chairman extended a hearty and cordial welcome to visitors, the majority of whom were from Te Awamutu. In making particular mention of the guest of the evening, Mr H. Weightman, the speaker eulogistically referred to him as the “Father of the Waipa Battalion of the Home Guard.” The splendid spade work done by Mr Weightman, together with his sterling services as adjutant had contributed largely to the Guard’s pre-sent-day success—a success, too, achieved in the face of great difficulties. In replying, Mr Weightman expressed his sincere thanks for the honour conferred upon him, stating that the excellent spirit of good fellowship which animated the Home Guard had made his work a real pleasure. The officer commanding and the second in command of D Company (Captain Livingstone and Mr P. Barry) both tendered apologies for unavoidable absence.
The musical programme was supported by the following artists:— Mrs Lindsay Young, Miss P. Long and Mr Ken Lewis (vocal); Mrs O’Leary (xylophone); humour by Messrs Bert Hey, Les. Spence and Mrs Trevor Nicholson; dances by Miss Pat Bridge and Miss Nola Morriss, and magic by Man Foo.
The chairman voiced th'anks to all workers who had lent valuable assistance and to the artists. Special thanks, he said, were due to the organiser, Mr Les. Spence, and to Mrs T. Nicholson, junior, who had so generously made her piano available for the evening. Mr Spence briefly replied. Supper was served and dancing continued till a late hour.
