WASTE PRODUCTS

ARRANGEMENTS FOR DRIVE COMPLETED To correct a mistake in the day mentioned in last issue, the Waste Products Committee at a meeting last night made further arrangements for the gigantic drive to be held next week-end. Saturday, July 11th, will be Town Day. Townsfolk will be issued pamplets early in the week detailing articles required, and schoolboys will canvas the houses and help place articles at gateways, while Scouts will canvas the business area and help get collections on to the footpaths ready for lorries to pick up.' Sunday, July 12th, will- be country day, and a full day is anticipated. The final arrangements now rest upon securing the co-operation of the carriers and lorries. PAST YEAR’S ACTIVITIES “The need for conservation of usable waste material is more urgent at present than ever before, and it is the duty of every citizen to assist the waste saving and waste collection effort,” said the Minister of Supply, Mr Sullivan, on Wednesday.-He said that throughout the past 12 months he had kept in close touch with the work of the National Council for Reclamation of Waste Material, and was pleased to hear that throughout the 11 provincial districts good results had been achieved. While the main object was to collect wanted waste, specially discarded or disused material required to aid the Dominion’s war effort, the council and its affiliated boards and committees had succeeded not merely in securing large quantities of metals, paper, cleaning rags, and glass containers, but had, by its sale, made a very substantial and welcome contribution of £9439 16s 7d to the National Patriotic' Fund Board. A cheque for this sum had been handed over to the secretary of the Patriotic Board, making a total of £14,481 since the council commenced operations 21 months ago. Eleven provincial districts would benefit, as the council apportioned the credits received, according to the volume and value of waste disposed of. Canterbury occupied first place with £3513, then Wellington with £2BOO, Auckland £1686, and Otago £626. From the other provinces, a total sum of £734 was received.
