NO GUARANTEE GIVEN

PERIOD OF OPERATION FOR PRIVATE CARS

No guarantee could be given to motorists that private cars would be permitted to operate for the full period for which they were relicensed last month, stated the Minister of Transport, the Hon. R. Semple, in the House of Representatives yesterday, when his department’s estimates were under discussion. He was replying to suggestions by Opposition members that a clear statement should be made. Mr W. S. Goosman (Opposition— Waikato) said it.was unfair to accept the licensing fees without telling the people where they stood. Mr Semple said the whole question depended upon the supplies of benzine and the instructions of those who controlled its supply to the Dominion. Replying to Opposition comments that additional traffic inspectors and the purchase of six new cars, estimated to cost £2OOO, seemed unnecessary in view of the reduced road traffic, Mr Semple said the inspectors were busier to-day than ever before. They were responsible for supervising the reserve stocks of benzine held in pumps, making surveys regarding petrol and tyres, and training 3000 emergency traffic officers.
