MILITARY SERVICE

Sir, —Some farmers are losing their sens because the youths are keen to play their part. The fathers do not appeal for them and they go into camp in due course. Married farmers 'are now in camp for the same reason. Some farmers, however, have no hesitation in appealing for members of their families all the time and get away with it. Many Home Guardsmen were parading and working on defence works over Easter and so were the soldiers in camp. On the other hand, some of those appealed for on the grounds of urgent farm work, were able to be on holiday over the Easter period. How does this come about? I think it is because the Man-power Committees have only one side of the question put to them and, having their time fully occupied in hearing cases in the different centres, have not the opportunity of knowing all the circumstances, I would suggest that a fully-qualified man be appointed to each committee to make inquiries in the district concerned and on the farms concerned, and make a report to the sitting members. The position as it is at present is creating a great deal of dissatisfaction in the country districts, and is giving the town people some grounds for thinking that the young men in the country are hot playing their part, when in reality it is only a few who are holding back. As a matter of fact it is generally the selfish farmer employers who is to blame.—l am, etc., COUNTRY DISTRICT.' Pukeatua. •
