BOBBY CALF POOL

TE AWAMUTU ORGANISATION THE YEAR’S OPERATIONS A meeting of the committee of the Te Awamutu Bobby Calf Pool took place yesterday, when there was a lull attendance of members. Mr B. C. O’Connor occupied the chair, and there were present Messrs Gordon Parker, W. Perrin, C. Old, C. J. Flay, A. F. Perrott, J. T. Young, L. B. Marx, S. H. West, A. R. Weal, A. E. Bryant, and E. Hopping. The chairman explained that owing to petrol economy measures it would be impossible to have representative meetings throughout New Zealand, so the Government had decided that all bobby calf committees should remain in office for the duration of the war unless special circumstances obtained in any particular area. The position was set out in a letter from the Hon. J. G. Barclay dated 15th January last.

The balance sheet and chairman’s report was read and adopted after full discussion.

A surplus of £9l 12s on the year’s working was carried forward to next year. This included £69 carried forward from the previous year. It was pointed out that £9l 12s was equal to .75 of one penny per calf, and was quite a reasonable figure when taken over a collection of 29,428 calves, which was a reduction of 1000 when compared with the previous year. The Te Awamutu pool was still the largest in New'Zealand, said the chairman. The chairman went on to say that the prospects at the beginning of last season looked anything but bright when the Government placed an embargo on the export of veal. To recoup supplies a subsidy of 2s per' calf was paid. The Department partly recouped itself by the sale of bobby calf meat, and the deficiency was made up by a charge against the special cheese account.

Strong exception was taken to this procedure, and a resolution to this “ffect was sponsored by Messrs Bryant and Gordon Parker. The chairman presented figures showing that the industry sustained a net loss of £169,000 by having to accept a 2s subsidy in lieu of the right to export. The losses through the same cause were:— £ Bull beef 85,000 Cull cows 50,000 Pigs (loss of id increment in F. 0.8.) ... 50,000 Loss on farm-killed bobby calves through export levy 10,000 A resolution that veils be paid for at market rates was carried, on the motion of Messrs Old and Parker. Mr G. O. Jourdain was re-elected secretary, and Messrs Armstrong and Kelly auditors. Mr B. C. O’Connor was re-elected chairman.

Delegates to the Waikato Federation: The chairman (Mr B. C. O’Connor) and Messrs J. T. Young and A. E. Bryant. The following resolution, on the motion of Messrs Bryant and Flay, was carried: “That this committee has every confidence in the Waikato Federation and the Central New Zealand Executive to handle the industry in the best interests of the producers.”
