To plant a row of pea seeds and see them develop into sturdy young bean plants of the dwarf variety and yield thereon pea pods with bean centres was the unusual experience of Mr C. Buttermore, of the Whakatane Post Office. A plant exhibited showed the genuine bean plant bearing definite pea pods, which were loaded with healthy bean seeds of a haricot type. The freak was a surprise to the grower, who stated that he bought the usual seed and was amazed to see the manner of growth. Ballot papers for the election of :> representative to the Auckland Land Board are being distributed throughout the Te Awamutu and Otorohanga districts. There are five nominations to fill the vacancy caused by Mr A. S. Sutherland’s election to Parliament, the nominees being: Charles Harris Burnett, Henry Thomas Head, Cyril Douglas Hobern, William Moore, Charles Walter Parfitt. Mr Head recently contested the Hauraki Parliamentary by-election as an Independent. The Land Board election will be held on 6th May. “The action of certain Government officers in approaching farm owners of larger types of tractors and obtaining particulars of their machines, together with the prices which they would place upon them, appears to have caused considerable apprehension which, on making inquiries from various departments, I am assured is not warranted by the facts,” said the Dominion President of the Farmers’ Union, Mr W. W. Mulholland, in a statement issued at Wellington on Saturday. “I have been assured,” he added, “there is no intention to take any of these tractors at present, but should they be needed by the Government they will be required only by voluntary negotiation and with the free consent of the farmer concerned.”
