FOR THE SOLDIERS
BOOKS AND MAGAZINES APPEAL BY THE MAYOR The Mayor (Mr L. G. Armstrong) to-day issued an appeal to the citizens of Te Awamutu and the residents of surrounding districts for books, periodicals and magazines for distribution among the men serving in the military forces in New Zealand as well as those overseas. Implementing the appeal, the Te Awamutu Library Committee, at a meeting held last night, decided to donate to the purpose 75 volumes from the Public Library, some of them being duplicate issues on hand. The tremendously increased scale of mobilisation in New Zealand following Japan’s entry into the war has made it urgently necessary to provide many more books for the War Library Service. Private gifts have proved an inadequate supply. The ratio of usable material to the tremendous total volume of material handled has been and always will be too low. Purchases have already been quite considerable, but they cannot be undertaken on the scale needed to do the job, because of the state of booksellers’ stocks and the heavy demands on patriotic funds for other needs. Everybody can help. Do it now. All books should be left at the Public Library, Te Awamutu, at once.
