THE RED CROSS

THE NEED FOR FUNDS LETTER FROM ENGLAND At the annual meeting of the Red Cross Society held last week a letter from a member of the Red Cross in England was read. It stated that the Red Cross had been over-subscribed, but now that help had to be given to Russia and China funds were short. Money was urgently needed. . When one thought that in the fighting areas in any one day motors and supplies to the value of thousands of pounds might be destroyed, and hospitals bombed, it did not need much thinking to realise that there must be larged sums in hand to carry on the work. No doubt red tape took a lot, but all work except that of doctors and trained nurses, who came under military pay, was absolutely voluntary. Working parties for hospitals, evacuees, bombed areas, and supplies generally had to be carried on; parcels of clothing and food costing £lOOO a day for prisoners of war were sent away; prisoners and people in bombed areas had to be traced; travelling ambulances, very expensive items fitted with all the most modern appliances for operating, had to be provided, and nurses and doctors maintained. Rest centres were also the responsibility of the Red Cross, which had to provide for their upkeep. PATERANGI SUB-BRANCH ANNUAL MEETING HELD The annual meeting of the Paterangi sub-branch of the Red Cross Society was held in the Paterangi Hall on Wednesday, Ist April, when Miss Curl Macky presided over a very good attendance of members and read the annual report. Germann and Miss F. Germann, were accorded a vote of thanks. It was owing to their keenness that so much had been done in this section and best wishes were extended to Mrs Germann for a speedy return to good health. The President thanked all members for their ready help and co-operation in the past and hoped that in the future they would maintain their good work. Mrs J. Parr congratulated Miss Macky on her report and the good work she had done during the year as President and also extended congratulations to Mrs S. Smith for the able manner in which she had carried out the duties of secretary and treasurer The sales table realised the good sum of £lO 0s 6id. Mrs A. Betts delighted the company with solos, which were much appreciated. Afternoon tea was served by the ladies of the Paterangi end of the district.
