FUTURE OPERATIONS
FUNCTION OF PIG COUNCIL DIFFICULTIES FACED Discussion on the future operations of the Council took place at the last meeting of the Auckland District Pig Council. It was pointed out that difficulties would arise when the Supervisor and the secretary entered the Armed Forces, and it was even suggested that 1 outside operations be suspended for the duration of the war. The petrol problem was causing anxiety and while this was unsatisfactory from the Supervisor’s point of view, a major difficulty would be that of replacing the Supervisor who had been called up and was likely to enter camp. The chairman, Mr R. C. Clark, urged that the committee should do its utmost to have the operations of the Council continued, although members should not blind themselves to the difficulties which were very real. Mr E. Huckle said that the district councils should be continued if possible, although perhaps on a modified scale, because after war they would have to jump straight into the collar to reorganise the pig industry to normal conditions. “We fought for years to get the principle of produce-control introduced and now that we have got it we should cling tenaciously to it. It was worth a big struggle to retain it,” said Mr A. Best. Finally, the following motions were carried and are to be sent as remits to the next meeting of the National Pig Industry Council:— “That in the opinion of this Council every effort should be made to continue the functions of the District Pig Council,” and also “This council suggests that the National Pig Industry Council should strive to get a reasonable and uniform allowance of petrol for the work of supervisors of Pig Councils.”
