ROLL OF HONOUR
DIED OF WOUNDS PRIVATE TREVOR LAUDER Official advice has now been received that Private Trevor Ernest Lauder, son of Mr E. R. Lauder of Auckland, has died of wounds. The soldier who has made the Supreme Sacrifice was well and popularly known in the Te Awamutu district, where he was regarded as “ one of the best.” A single man, about thirty years of age, the late Private Lauder had worked for six or seven years for Mr S. Empson, of Puniu Road, for about five years with Mr Lincoln Sager, of Te Rahu, and for a brief period at the Hotel Te Awamutu when Wir J- Shea was licensee. He joined up with the Second New Zealand Expeditionary Force in August, 1939, and sailed for an overseas destination in December of that year. He was through the fierce fighting in Greece and Crete, and, during the short campaign on that island, was reported “ missing, believed prisoner.” It is now officially confirmed that he has succumbed to wounds. The late Private Lauder was, years ago, an enthusiastic member of the Rovers Football Club, and also was prominent in cricketing circles. Of a kindly and generous nature, he made a host of friends in the Te Awamutu district. A sister is Mrs A. Rhe, pf Wharepapa. LOST AT SEA PILOT-OFFICER W. U. HEWETT Pilot-Officer William Upton Hewett, son of Mrs J. E. Hewett, of Roto-o-Rangi, is, it is officially announced, presumed to have been lost at sea while engaged in air operations. PRISONERS OF WAR SERGEANT C. WALKER Additional names of New Zealand prisoners of war in Italy were broadcast by the Vatican Radio, Rome, on Monday night, and included that of Sergeant C. Walker, P.O. Box 68, Te Awamutu.
