TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO

(FROM THE WAIPA POST, 15th OCTOBER, 1916.)

At the fortnightly meeting of the Te Awamutu Borough Council the Waitomo County Council asked the Council’s support to a resolution asking that the voluntary system of recruiting be discontinued and that compulsion be enforced to stay the enlistment of youths while many men were allowed to remain. Cr Ahier classed as disgraceful the attitude of the Government in failing to administer the laws it had brought into force. It had no backbone, and was pushing the work on to the local bodies as much as possible. Cr McGechie strongly supported the last speaker’s remarks. He was disgusted with the uncertain policy of the Government, and it was deserving of condemnation for its general failure to bring into force the legislation it had placed on the Statute Book. Ci Henderson did not support the suggestion that all older men were shirking while youths were going forward. He supported the general principle that the law should be enforced. The Council unanimously resolved to supoorf the resolution brought forward. A fire, resulting in the destruction of the butcher’s shop and adioining store-room occurred at Pirongia at 10 o’clock on Sunday morning. The buildings were owned and occupied by Mr A. H. Jones.

At a special meeting of members of the Te Awamutu Philharmonic Society on Friday evening it was decided that effort be made to re-estab-lish the Society, and all present offered to endeavou’r to secure new members.
