THE HOME GUARD

STAFF OFFICERS TO TRAIN VARIOUS UNITS. No. 4 AREA APPOINTMENTS. Captain E_. N. Newton, N.Z.T.S., has been appointed Group Adjutant and Quartermaster to the Home Guard in No. 4 Area (which, as is well known, covers Te Awamutu, Otorohanga and adjacent districts), with headquarters at Hamilton. Captain Newton served in France with the 2nd Auckland Battalion in the Great War. Captain Newton will supervise the training of the Home Guard battalions in the area and the distribution of stores and equipment. Two staff instructors have also been appointed and have commenced their duties. They are Sergeant-Major J, P. Alexander, M.M., and SergeantMajor G. L. Martin, both of whom saw service with the N.Z.E.F. during the Great War. The third instructor selected from this area, Sergeant-Major E. J. Elliott, of Cambridge, has been appointed Group Adjutant at Wanganui, and the vacancy caused by his promotion will be filled in the near future. The services of these instructors will be available for the training of Home Guard officers and N.C.O.’s. The first course of instruction will be held at Cambridge throughout next week for the officers and N.C.O.’s of the Cambridge Battalion.
