PROPOSAL TO PURCHASE. AGREEMENT RATIFIED BY LOCAL COUNCIL. At the meeting of the Te Awamutu Borough Council on Monday evening the clerk to the Waipa County Council wrote forwarding a full report of the recent conference of local bodies, the outcome of which had been to decide to purchase wihat is known as Miller’s Block (containing 300 acres of virgin bush) on the slopes of Pirongia Mountain for £l7OO, the Council’s share of which would be £4OO, plus an annual contribution, on a pro rata basis, to the cost of reafforestation. The Mayor briefly outlined the decision arrived at by the conference, and said it remained for the Council to ratify the agreement reached. Cr Dalton asked what had made the Mayor change his opinion on the proposal, to which he seemed at first opposed. The Mayor replied the reason was that the whole matter 4>ad been rearranged on a different basis. More local bodies had co-operated, and it was now recognised more as a community (i. e. district) matter. Cr Parsons moved, and Cr de Coek seconded, that the allocation and replanting scheme be approved, subject to the other local bodies joining in. The Mayor, in reply to a question, said it had been tentatively suggested that the Te AwanYutu Council should be the controlling authority and carry on and extend its afforestation work.
