THE CEMETERY

MEETING OF THE BOARD. SPECIAL SOLDIERS’ PLOTS. At the first meeting since the elections of the Te Awamutu Cemetery Board, held on Monday night, Mr L G. Armstrong, as Mayor, was elected chairman. The clerk and foreman were authorised to have the fence along the side of the Anglican and Presbyterian burial grounds removed further back. Regarding the suggestion by the R.S.A. that a special area at the cemetery be set aside as soldiers’ plots, the General Purposes Committee (as constituted for lhe Borough Council) v r as authorised to interview that body regarding the proposal and report back to the Board. In reply to Mr Les. S. Armstrong, the clerk (Mr Dudley Bockett) stated that the fees charged for burials were the same for town and country alike, namely £2 fee with £1 for labour. Mr C. J. Spiers said that in some parts of New Zealand, people from outside the area were charged double fees. Although approached twice, the Waipa County Council had declined to contribute to the cost of mainten ance of the Te Awamutu cemetery. Mr V. A. de Coek observed that it seemed a reasonable proposition that the County should contribute. The clerk said that burials were supposed to take place at the nearest cemetery. The discussion then lapsed and the meeting terminated.
