SUCCESSFUL POKURU EFFORT. BRILLIANT SUCCESS. The adults’ fancy dress masked dance, held in the Pokuru Hall on Saturday evening in aid of Red Cross funds, was a great success. It was one of the most successful functions ever held in the district. Excellent music was supplied by Syd. Strange’s Orchestra, and an extra was played by Miss P. Melville. The judging of the many and varied costumes was in the capable hands of Mesdames Lewis Eyre and J. Regan, of Kihikihi; the committee’s thanks are due to them. Mr B. Boswell made an efficient M.C. The surprise of the evening was by the entrance of a Negro wedding party, to the strains of the Wedding March, the party consisting of Messrs H. Hawley, best man; R. Lisk, bridesmaid; V. McPherson, parson; Mrs Lisk, bridesmaid; and the Misses J. Pacey, bride; and P. Snowden, groom. Other sets worthy of mention were: Doctor, P. Fowler; nurse, T. Hudson; patient, B. Pratt; and the Dionne Quints, represented by the following: lan Donaldson, Mrs Dionne; Rex Wyllie, Mr Dionne; C. Self, Dr Dafoe; J. Austin, Annette; S. Harty, Cecily; 'M. Wyllie, Yvonne; F. Clarke, Marie; F. Clarke, Little Marie; B. Donaldson, Emily. Prizes were awarded to the following:— Ladies: Prettiest, Miss Molly, Weal, 18th century; most original lady, Miss P. Fowler, doctor; best couple, Misses E. Gray and 0. Laurence, black orpington hen and rooster. Men: Prettiest, R. Palmer (Otorohanga), toreador; most original, E. Melville, black-out. Others in fancy dress were: Messrs W. Taylor, Nigger; M. Law, depression from Iceland; I. Budden, Indian; T. Burchell, bandit; C. Melville, skeleton; M. Neill, convict; H. Murphy, black moth.
