RECORD BOMB

DROPPED ON EMIDEN. During last month a British airman dropped on the German base of Em den the largest bomb ever flung from an aeroplane (writes the London correspondent of the Sydney Morning Herald). It was a birthday present from the “ back-room boys ” at the Air Ministry, the Minister for Aircraft Production, Lord Beaverbrook, told the House of Lords. “ About a fortnight ago,” he said- “ one of our officers of the Development branch, who was engaged on designing bombs, tested a great bom|b, loaded it on an aeroplane, flew off to Emden, dropped his cargo, and within a few hours was back at the Ministry relating his experiences to me in technical language. Air Commodore Huskinson, the ‘ back-room boy ’ who designed the new bomb with which the Royal Air Force is blasting Germany, has been blindeo because of his devotion to duty.” Lord Beaverbrook, telling the story, said: “During the great Wednesday night blitz on London Air Commodore Huskinson left his bed and went to ,a. window to watch the effect of the explosion of the bombs. He wanted to see the effect of the enemy efforts compared with our own. He was struck by a blast from, a bomb, and was blinded.” The London Daily Express adds a postscript To the story'. There is some hope that Air Comlmodore Huskinson’s sight may be restored, it says. This will be known definitely in a few days.
