ANXIOUS TO SERVE
PATRIOTIC MAORIS. The list of voluntary enrolments of Maoris from Gisborne and the east coast for service overseas with the Maori Battalion last week passed 1000. There are approximatelv 12,000 Maori people of all ages in the area, and the enrolments thus represent one for every 12 men, women, and children. Enlistment has been carried on entirely on a voluntary basis, arid repeatedly the district has found drafts for the Maori Battalion, . frequently filling shortages of other districts. Even with this additional drain it has been possible to build up a reserve of 68 men fit and ready to serve when called on. Married men form the majority of this group, and' they are now forcing the pace by inquiries as to when they can expect to be called into a mobilisation camp.
The recent distinction won by the Maori Battalion in the campaign in Greece has quickened interest noticeably, and the Maoris of the district are anxious to see that the roll of the Battalion is sustained.
