Something of a sensation was caused in Te Awamutu last Saturday morning when the news spread that the police had made a raid on local business premises seeking information as to illicit betting. As a result two well-known townsmen, Thomas Carter, hairdresser and tobacconist, of Sloane Street, and James Orr, hairdresser, Alexandra Street, were charged later in the before Mr W. Swain, J.P., each v|itlr keeping a common gaming house. On the application of the police remands were granted till 9th February, the date of the next sitting of the Magistrate’s Court in Te Awamutu.
The raid was carried out swiftly, and those concerned in it were De-tective-Sergeant Thompson and Sergeant Anstis, Detective White, and Constable Henry, of Hamilton, and Constables H. Carseldine (in charge here during the absence of Sergeant S. G. Clist) and Rush. As the police were seen to enter the shops word was rapidly flashed round the town, and many were the interested citizens as the parties repaired to the police station. When the cases come before the Court there will assuredly be a recurrence of the keen local interest.
