AT THE EMPIRE

AGAIN TONIGHT. “THE OUTSIDER.” Some years ago a little Australian girl played truant from school to watch her favourite film stars, and thereby fed a consuming ambition to become an actress herself. Apparently the urge was strong, for she found ways and means of beginning her career. At sixteen she was given a part in an Australian film; a year later her talent and beauty earned her a Hollywood contract, where she was acclaimed as the prettiest girl in pictures. Even a Hollywood superlative can have truth, as audiences will agree when they see “ The Outsider ’’ at the Empire Theatre. In this picture Mary Maguire is the crippled daughter of a Harley Street surgeon who is cured by an unorthodox practitioner. Her acting in a difficult, tensely emotional part is a perfect portrayal of the beautiful, artistically-minded girl whose great tragedy is her lameness. Wiith Geo. Sanders as the foreign, blatant-man-.nered bone-setter who cures her, she has turned out a film that should draw record attendances. “ The Outsider.” should it prove the best thing in Miss Maguire’s career, is a worthy climax. Any star would be proud of ' it.
