BIG ENTRY AT CLAUDELANDS. QUALITY ANIMALS IN DEMAND. Realisations on the opening day of. the annual national Jersey Bull Sale at the Claudelands Showgrounds on Wednesday were considerably better than anticipated, th,e 74 bulls sold making the very satisfactory average of 37 gns., and the tops of the offering selling freely from 50 to 110 gns. Seldom have better quality entries been seen at a bull fair in the Waikato, and both as regards individuality and breeding there was little to be desired. The majority of entries had a wealth of butterfat backing behind them and + his proved a factor in the keen tone of the market throughout the sale.

The entry was representative of 53 of the leading studs in the Dominion, buyers being given an unusual opportunity of acquiring quality sires of some of the country’s most famous producing strains. The bulls were brought forward in excellent cond’tion, and before being led into the sale ring had to pass a rigorous examination by the inspection committee.

The top price of the day, 110 gns., was paid, by the Waimana breeder, Mr T. Wardlaw, for Noku Wanderer, an outstanding two-year-old by Golden Wanderer from the V.H.C. cow Meon Noku. The vendor was Mr Truby King, of New Plymouth. This young (bull is royally bred on both sides of his pedigree, having a paternal grandsire in the champion butterfat bull, Vagabond of Oaklands (imp.), and a maternal grandsire in another great imported bull, Brampton Dreaming Sam, sire of 12 V.H.C. cows with an average of 605 lbs. fat.

For Pinecrest You’ll Do, an attractive two-ear-old by the champion butterfat bull, Pinewoods Silver Lad and from the high-producing Cyrilla’s Twylish Girl, H.C., C.O.R. 1023 lb fat at 11 years, a North Auckland buyer, Mr A. Pettman, of Rawene, gave 87i rrns. The vendor was a,n Inglewood breeder, Mr E. J. Clough.

Another North Auckland breeder, Mr E. Parker, of Kaitaia,. was the last bidder at 86 gns. on Waipiko Ivanhoe, one of the attractive individuals of the consignment from Mr C. G. C. Dermer, of Cheltenham, Feilding. Mr Parker’s purchase was by Waipiko Anchor and out of Lea Rig Idalia’s Saucy, H.C. A particularly well-bred two-year-old in Norman Baron, by Baron Rupert and from the outstanding producer, Ivondale Silver Rainbow, H.C., C.O.R. 950 lb. fat at 3 years, took the bidding to 77 J gns. when it was knocked down to Messrs Warman Bros., of Katikati. The New Plymouth breeder, Mr Truby King was the vendor. For 71 gns. a Pukeatua buyer, Mr W. D. Bethune, was the final bidder on a yearling submitted by Mr C. G. C. Dermer, Waipiko Joy Victor, iby Waipiko Victory from Waipiko Joy Queen, H.C. Seventy guineas secured for Mrs H. Cruller, of Whangarei, a four-year-old bull, Bokaboa Conqueror, by Bokaboa Goldmine from Waipiko Cosette, H.C., C.O.R. 867 lb. fat at 4 years. The vendor was Mrs H. Larsen, of Cheltenham. Purchasers for Te Awamutu and neighbouring districts included the following:— Cloverfields Volunteer, Boon and Berg, Whakatane, to A. F. Braine, Kawhia, 37 gns. Cloverfields Bright Boy, same vendors to L. G. Wilkinson, Ngahinapouri, 38 gns. Premier Royal Dream, Messrs W. Dunn and Sons, Waihou, to G. Finn, Te Rore, 30 gns. Santa Rosa Ensign, J. A. Mitchell, Longbum, to J. E. Sinclair, Otcrohanga, 43 gns. Tuhitarata Noble Oxford, J. Jameson, Masterton, to D. M. J. Pattison, Kihikihi, 67 gns. Beechland’s Forward Flag, A. Moreland and Sons, Cambridge, to E. 01lett, Otorohanga, 50 gns. Premier Royal Courier, W. Dunn and Sons, Waihou, to W. Alexander, Te Awamutu, 278 gns. Greencroft Improver, J. Bones, Kaipaki, to T. Smith, Otorohanga, 57 gns. Greencroft Rajah, same vendor to J. Ryburn, Ngahinapouri, 21 gns.
