THE NARROWS BRIDGE
FIRST STRUCTURE ERECTED. The fact that a new traffic bridge over the Waikato River at the Narrows (between Rukuhia and Tamahere) is under construction at present, at a cost of many thousands of pounds, gives special interest to an announcement in the advertising columns of the Waikato Times, dated 25th July, 1878, being a list of subscribers towards the erection of a bridge at the Narrows. The notification reads: “The committee has opened accounts at the Bank of New Zealand, Hamilton and Cambridge and the Union Bank, Hamilton, and requests that subscriptions not already paid be lodged to the credit of the Narrows Bridge Fund Account with as little delay as possible.” The total amount subscribed at that date was £354 17s, and the donors and their amounts are set out. The largest sums were the £2O each by S. S. Graham and John Runciman. Among the subscribers of £5 were C. J. Storey, W. N. Searancke, Major Wilson, and W. I. Taylor; and further down the list were D. Bockett £3 3s, A. Kay £2, Major Jackson £2, W. Walker £2, E. Rhodes £2, J. H. Mandeno £l, and W. A. Cowan £l. Seven Maoris contributed £l7 among them.
