ROAD TOO NARROW

LOCAL SCHOOL BUS ROUTES AFFECTED. NEED FOR IMPROVEMENT. Cr G. S. Clarke, speaking at Wednesday’s meeting of iWiaipa County Council, asked for a report on the condition of the roads traversed by school buses. He said he understood the drivers of school buses were instructed not to pull off the roads to allow traffic to pass. Some of the roads had very narrow metalled surfaces, and it seemed likely that all other traffic would have to give way to the school buses. The local authority would have to tackle the problem of widening long lengths of road. He suggested that the authorities be be asked for special grants in order to do the work. In the resultant discussion Cr G. S. Hall asserted that the Hairini-Pua-hue Road was the worst road in the county traversed by school buses. He intended to bring the matter under the notice of the Minister of Education when that gentleman visited Te Awamutu next week. He regarded the Puahue Road as positively dangerous in many places, being far too narrow for the increasing traffic carried. The engineer (Mr J. W. Civil) said the Puahue Road was formed during the regime of the old Parawera Road Board. The alignment was not at all good. Cr G. S. Clarke suggested that the chairman and riding members affected should make representations to the Minister. That course was agreed to.
