SPORTING NOTES

THE WAIPA WINTER MEETING. TO-MORROW’S RACING AT TE RAPA. (By “Backwood.”) With good weather prevailing there should be a very successful meeting at Te Rapa to-morrow, where the Waipa Racing Club will be conducting its winter meeting, owing to the Te Awamutu course being unsuitable for racing at present. There are splendid acceptances, and good keen contests seem assured. It should be noted that the first race is timed to commence at 11.15 a.m. and the club’s intention is to close the totalisators promptly to advertised time, so investors should make their lodgments early—and trust to luck. The Andrew Kay Memorial Hack and Hunters’ Steeples is the first race, and the distance is 2 J miles. The public may have difficulty in finding a favourite, but the five best backed will almost certainly be Mio Lume, London, Bells of Bow, Aramis and Windsor Lass. At the weights the two last named may be preferred, but London is a capable jumper (though he fell at Ellerslie), and 10.8 should not prevent him taking part in the final rush to the judge’s box. Aramis belongs to the Otorohanga sportsman, Mr Henry Rothery, and a win for him would be very popular. Local interest will centre in Mr H. Weal’s Arcadian, but this gelding has done nothing to warrant much support. The

Hack Handicap has sixteen engaged, as follows:

Superior Guard is said to have had a set-back in his preparation, and there will probably be a preference for Du Mauri er, Forest Acre and Ngawiri. The first-named has a hard job to concede Forest Acre 151bs. Aly th would be a decided prospect, but she has disappointed lately. Sing Lee may affect a surprise. No. 3 race is the Woodstock Stakes, ten furlongs, and some good middledistance handicappers are engaged, as

The top weight will be competing on his home course, and can carry the weight. A quartette from which the favourite will almost certainly be chosen comprises Malagigi, Enge, Gold Vaals (winner at Tauranga last Saturday), and Valmint (runner-up to Cheval de Voiee in the Cornwall Handicap). Gay Rose is a solid' mare and a couple of improvers are Kena and General Ruse. At present there are indications that Valmint will be favourite. The W. G. Park Steeplechase should provide an excellent race, with the following engaged:

Of the three at the top of the handicap, All Irish may be best supported, for he has more pace than the other two. Bryce Street will probably be favourite over Inness Lad, a double winner at Tauranga. Lucidus should hold Kinkle safe, and the three at the bottom of the handicap have an earlier engagement. Ne.y conies the Arapuni Hack Handicap, second division, with the following fifteen engaged:

Pirate King, the top weight, has plenty of speed, but at present it seems likely that Fleetwind and Sen Acre will be preferred by investors. Professional is in good condition now, and may beat the others. Of the others the best backed may he Susan and Poland. Now comes the Oraxau Hurdles, with fifteen acceptors, including some

The bracket Kilberis and Orac looks good, especially if Inness Lad is started in the Steeplechase, and most opposition may come from Killadar and Mia Acrea. If there is a surprise it may come from Sinking Fund, who has more pace than any of the others. Professional is expected to be an absentee. The Seddon Handicap is for the

good class sprinters, and is as fol lows:

held safe by some of the lighter weights. If Gold Vaals is reserved for this he should be nearly favourite, with perhaps Maori Song and Hunting Blood a little better backed. Orate may find the long straight will affect his chances, but he is very fast, as also is Gay Seton, who seems to be at his best again. The bracket, Te Monowai and Besiege, may be as good as any of the others. The final event of the day is the Hairini Hack Handicap, one mile, as follows:

Loombination has plenty of weight, but should be well supported. The actual favourite may come from Gay Sister, Mia Fratollo and Silver Glow, but El Meynell and Arawa Rose can both run out a solid mile. Raceline is also a prospect. Most money may be entrusted to Silver Glow. C. G. GOULSBRO’S APPEAL. DISQUALIFICATION LIFTED. Word was received in Te Awamutu yesterday morning to the effect that the Racing Conference had allowed the appeal of the Te Awamutu horseman, C. G. Goulsbro, against his disqualification for six months under rule 282 of the Rules of Racing. Goulsbro was disqualified by the judicial committee of the Wanganui Jockey Club on the grounds that he did not ride the horse Catalogue on its merits in the Connolly Handicap run on May 12. The appeal to the Racing Conference followed an unsuccessful appeal to the Wanganui district committee. Goulsbro will now be able to resume riding, and expects to have at least two mounts at Te Rapa to-morrow, even though many owners had made their arrangements for riders before the appeal was allowed. Further evidence in the case was tendered by Goulsbro and by Mr Gomer, the chief stipendiary steward and the Conference judges, Messrs H. F. O’Leary, J. W. Card and W. Chalmers stated: — ‘‘While we have ,arrived at our decision on the case placed before us it is not unimportant to state that the District Committee, which comprised very experienced racing men, some of whom closely observed the race, were equally divided on the question of allowing the appeal, the appeal being disallowed on a casting vote of the chairman. The further evidence which we heard did not materially advance the case for or against Gouls bro and, while we cannot escape the conclusion that he rode an injudicious race, we cannot see that it was proved beyond reasonable doubt that he did not ride the horse on his merits. The appeal is therefore allowed.” RIDING ENGAGEMENTS. The following riding engagements have been made for to-morrow:— N. McKenzie: Enge, Professional, Forest Acre, Maori Song, Arawa Rose. J. McLaughlin: Raceline, Orwere. H. Long: Gay Rebel, Hempton. C. L. Goulsbro: Malagigi, Rackle, Miss Clipper, Hessketoon. W. M, Thomson: Kena, Mangukaha, Devon. J.
