REGENT THEATRE. TO-NIGHT AND TO-MORROW “SOPHIE LANG GOES WEST.” Gertrude Michael, who plays the title role in “Sophie Lang Goes West/ which opens to-night at the Regent Theatre, has made the “Sophie Lang" character so well known that it’s improbable that it will ever be played by any other actress. Miss Michael made two pictures of the series, “The Notorious Sophie Lang” and “The Return of Sophie Lang,” thus setting the character in the mind of audiences as a definite personality. When Paramount was planning- a new Sophio Lang picture there was talk of putting another actress in the title role_. but Miss Michael’s fans had something to say about that. Plenty to say, in fact. So Gertrude stayed! By the way, Gertrude Michael was a business woman who managed a radio station—and played concert piano, and did a number of other specialised things before she became an actress. Her first big acting part came from her ability on tho piano, but she doesn’t need the piano to put her acting over. AT THE EMPIRE. OPENING TO-NIGHT. “ADVENTURE’S END.” Mutiny on the high seas! Romance. The daughter of a dying sea captain married by her father to a stowaway who alone can save the ship and prevent a threatened May and December alliance. Suspense—as a whale smashes a small boat during a hurricane in the Southern Seas! Pearls and a crew gone treasure crazy! A great Ben Ames Williams novel! These are a few of the elements Universal put into the classic sea story, “Adventure’s End” which comes tonight to the Empire Theatre, with John Wayne and Diana Gibson in the leading roles. Filled with surprises, from the start of the picture in which a native pearl diver is saved from the tentacles of a giant octopus by Wayne, until the heroine finally finds out who is the “better man,” “Adventure’s End” is one of the best sea stories that has come to the screen since John Barrymore made “The Sea Beast.”
