RUGBY FOOTBALL

WAIKATO VERSUS AUCKLAND. FOUR WAIPA PLAYERS CHOSEN. The first Waikato representative Rugby football fifteen of the season which will play Auckland at Rugby Park, Hamilton, on Monday next (the king’s Birthday), has been announced by the sole selector (Mr J. R. McKenzie). The team is as follows: Full-back: L- Haworth (Cambridge). Three-quarters: W. Tombs (Waipa), R. Everest (Hamilton), G. H. Childs (Putaruru).

Five-eighths: G. Hawke (Matamata), P. Hawke (Matamata). Half-back: L. Russell (Morrinsville). Back row: J. Flannagan (Hamilton).

Middle row: L- McAlpine (Waipa), A. Thomson ( Waipa), Warrender (Matamata), J. G. Wynyard (Waipa). Front row: S. Harbutt (Cambridge), E. H. Catley (Taupiri), M. Taylor (Taupiri). Reserves: Backs: A. Brown (Matamata), A. Gillespie (Hamilton). Forwards: W. Daniell (Waipa), E. Hall (Cambridge). Of the 19 players selected, five are from Waipa, four from Matamata. three from Hamilton, three from Cambridge, two from Taupiri, one from Morrinsville, and one from Putaruru Three players have won Waikato honours for the first time; they are Haworth (full-back), whose displays during the last two weeks, especially in the game against Putaruru were impressive; G. Hawke, who will partner his brother in the five-eighths line; and S. Harbutt, a former New Plymouth High School player who is now at the peak of his form in leading the strong Cambridge pack. The selection occasions no surprise Other players who were early considered to have chances of gaining Waikato honours this season have disappointed during recent games, and Clarke (Waipa) has apparently not yet regained the past season’s form, The team should be a strong one, with a better back line than was at first anticipated. The forwards are very strong, and with Catley hooking foi a heavy pack Waikato should gain more than a share of the ball. ALL BLACK TRIALS. WAIKATO NOMINATIONS. TWO BACKS AND TWO FORWARDS. Four Waikato Rugby footballers have been nominated for All Black and North Island honours in the New Zealand side to visit Australia this season, by the Waikato sole-selctor, Mr J. R. McKenzie. The nominations announced are:

J. G. Wynyard (W T aipa), age 23; weight, 14.8; height, 6ft Jin. Side row.

E. H. Catley (Taupiri), aged 22; weight, 13.8; height, 6ft. Hooker. L. T. Russell (Morrinvsille), age 22; weight, 10.2; height, sft 9in. Half-back.

R. Everest (Hamilton), age 23: weip-ht, 11.0; height, sft lOin. Centrethreequarter. J. G. Wynyard is the only nominee who has previously gained Ail Black honours, having toured with the 1935 team to Great Britain as a side-row forward. On that tour Wynyard played eight games. He was not selected to participate in the All Black trials in participation for the Test matches against the Springboks last season, but this year Wynyard has revealed much more convincing form, playing for Te Awamutu in the Waikato Stag Trophy championships. He carries more weight than in 1935 and is much better class, being outstanding in the line-outs and in the loose. As a break-away he lias a sound knowledge of tactics.

E. H. Catley is the hooker for the Waikato representatives. He was nominated for the All Black trials last season but did not play in any of the games. He hooked for the Combined Waikato-King Country-Thames Valley team against the Springboks at Hamilton and won as much of the ball as any other hooker in the Dominion in subsequent matches. He is another hard-working forward who excels in the line-outs and loose as well as the tight. He is a solid type. L. T. Russell is the Waikato representative half-back. He played in two of the five All Black trials last season but unfortunately he was injured when his selection for the Test side seemed very likely. In the trials he proved clever and a good all-round player. Quick dashes from the position, accurate long passes and sound defence made him the best half-back of the trials. He is at the peak of his form at present, having recovered from his injury, and his selection for the Australian tour is probably assured.

The final nominee is R. Everest, the only Hamilton player in the quartette. He played centre for the Combined team at Hamilton and indicated that he is a capable player. He is possibly one of '•he soundest defensive threequart-ers in the Dominion, being very reliable in tackling. His speed is a great asset. ■WAIPA UNION. MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE MEETS. The president Mr R. S. Sinclair, presided at the weekly meeting of the Waipa Rugby Union management committee on Monday evening, and also present were Messrs R. L. Adams, C. W. Smith, C R. Brown, S. Baddeley, G- L. Daniell. P. Stephens, and R. Dalziell (secretary). Medical certificates were received in respect of the following injured players: M. Mooney, G. Grace, W. Ryan. R. H. Cleaver, W. King, R. Davidson

and J. Southey.—The secretary was asked to check up on these and report to next meeting. The chairman asked members of the committee to bring to notice any cases where they considered players were injured and forwarded a certificate, and then played the following Saturday. Rovers Club application for the re-' grading of C. Hullton and S. Rose was granted. The secretary of the Albert Park grandstand trustees wrote: “The trustees note with regret that your Union is apparently failing in its undertaking to keep the area between the picket fence in front of the grandstand and the side-line of No. 1 playing area clear of spectators during matches. On Saturday last, during the Rovers versus Taupiri game, fully one hundred spectators were on the outside of the picket fence, and it was necessary for the trustees to obtain police assistance to prevent these people from encroaching on the playing field. I am instructed to advise that unless the Union is prepared to carry out its undertaking it is the intention of the trustees to appoint a special man to keep the area clear, and the cost of same will be charged to the Rugby Union.”

After discussion the secretary was instructed to write to the trustees regretting that they had had occasion to write to the Union in the matter, and giving an assurance that there would be no recurrence. The Referees’ Association is to be asked to instruct referees to stop play if spectators encroach on the playing area. It was added that while the Union admitted the remarks contained in the trustees’ letter the Union desired to point out that it had no jurisdiction over the playing areas, and that ii‘ the trustees employed a person to clear the ground the Union would recognise no responsibility in the matter.

To a question by the president, Mr Stephens said only five clubs had paid their affiliation fees.—Delegates were asked to bring the matter before their clubs for early attention. The secretary was instructed to remind the Parawera Club that insurance for the match on 25th May had not yet been naid, and the Junior Advisory Board is to be recon*4:nended that the Parawera Club team be not included in the draw until the insurance has been paid. To another question, the secretary reported that he could give no indication as to when the forty-five passes applied for for the grandstand would be available.

It was decided to issue free grandstand passes to Mr G. Reynolds and his workers, and to Mr Mansfield (weighing officer) and Mr G. W. Mairs, such passes to be provided from the thirty already in hand from the trustees.

The Union will issue grandstand passes to members and officials of the Union and team managers who apply for them. It was understood that any passes not applied for would be returned to the trustees.

It was decided to order 20 representative jerseys, with numbers attached.

It was proposed to nominate a Waipa team for the Peace Cup competition but it was pointed out that nominations did not have to be lodged until 30th June, so decision was deferred until the week before that date.

It was agreed that Saturday next be a charge day at Albert Park, where, in addition to the Rovers versus Te Awamutu match in the Stag competition, the seven-a-side tournament, with 29 teams engaged, would be played. Mr Brown asked, in connection with the seven-a-side tournament, that two men be appointed for each playing area to see that the competing teams are ready for their respective games, so that play could begin and finish to schedule.—Mr Daniell offered to get an assistant and look after No. 1 ground. The Union agreed to provide three bells for the tournament. Mr Brown was asked to obtain the services of two ball boys for regular duty on No. 1 ground, and to procure shorts and white jersey for each boy. It was mentioned that Rovers Club junior team would journey to Pukekohe on the King’s Birthday (Monday next), to play the Franklin junior representative team.
