BOBBY CALF POOL

MEETING IN TE AWAMUTU. IMPORTANT PROPOSALS. A meeting of farmers, convened by Te Awamutu branch of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union, will be held in the Oddfellows’ Hall, Te Awamutu, tomorrow, proceedings commencing at 11 a.m.

The meeting is one of the utmost importance and it is hoped that there will be a large and representative attendance.

The subject for discussion d*nd decision will be the formation of a local bobby calf pool and the meeting will be addressed by Mr R. A. Candy, of Ngarua, and Mr N. Thompson, secretary of the Auckland Farmers’ Freezing Company.

FEDERATION OF POOLS. AN IMPORTANT MOVE. A federation of bobby calf pools operating throughout the whole of the Piako County and in adjoining districts was formed at a meeting of delegates at Morrinsville last week. Mr R. A. Candy, of Ngarua, presided. The following pools have joined the federation: Springdale - Elstow, Kereone-Kiwitahi, Tahuna, Ngarua, Walton, Manawaru-Waihou and Motumaoho. The Tauhei pool's delegates also attended the meeting, but had no authority from their mem bers to join the federation. Mr R. B. Westwater, of Morrinsville, was appointed secretary of the federation. An executive was appointed as follows: Messrs R. A. Candy (Ngarua), A. E. Mikklesen and J. T. Finnegan (Manawaru - Waihou), E. Palliger and A. H. Coombe (SpringdaleElstow), S. A. Ferguson (Motumaho), F. C. Kennedy (Kereone - Kiwitahi), G. R. White (Tahuna) and J. W. Attwood (Walton). It is understood that the pools will commence collecting calves in a few weeks’ time. At a meeting of farmers in the Mangaiti district it was decided to link up with the Springdale-Elstow bobby calf pool, after the advantages to be gained by co-operative marketing had been clearly shown by Messrs Palliser, Needham, Strange and Coombe. NEED FOR SHELTER. Farmers should provide suitable shelter for bobby calves during the time the animals are left waiting at farmgates to be picked up by motor lorries. This matter was emphasised at the annual .meeting of the Okato Farmers' Union, when it was pointed out that barbed-wire fences provided no protection at all.
